Excessive Barking: What's Going On With My Dog?

by Thomas Turner

If your dog has been barking a great deal, you might be at your wits end. Barking dogs are one of the banes of a neighborhood, but you might not know what to do, and you might not even know why your dog is barking so loudly or so often. If you have been troubled by your dog barking more than they should, you'll find that there are several things that you need to keep in mind.

The first thing that you should remember is that some dogs were bred this way. If you have a sporting dog, you might find that the best thing that you can do to make them bark less, is keep in mind that many dogs were bred to be very loud and vocal. A dog will also bark if they have needs that are not being met, whether they are asking for water or for food. You may find that if a dog is uncomfortable that they will bark a great deal. You'll also discover that some dogs bark if they are feeling lonely or if they are trying to defend their territory. As you can see, there are many reasons why a dog might bark, and the key is to make sure that you can address it.

When you are looking at your dog, one thing that you need to keep in mind is that your dog might be bored or anxious. If your dog is kept alone outside for extended periods of time, this might be why they are barking. You'll find that you can make the problem go away very quickly if you simply bring them in or go out and spend time with your dog. If you are looking to make sure that your dog is feeling less lonely, arrange to have someone come by to see to them while you are at work.

Plus, while you are out there, you may want to check your dogs surroundings. Check and make sure their shelter is leak proof so when it rains they aren't barking because they are getting soaking wet, or that they have shade to hide from the sun beating down on them during a hot day. Not only will the sun make them bark from discomfort, but it can make them very sick if they are exposed to it long enough.

The last thing you should ever do is punish your dog for barking. This is their way of communicating with you, and being punished for it will only confuse the poor pup. Especially, if they are barking from loneliness or anxiety, this can cause the problem to get worse, hurt you and your dogs relationship.
